"No Rights"
A cause I would go to prison for— the human rights that are slipping through our fingers.  Ghost like hands, new laws and regulations, that gradually and continually restrict us, censor us, and immobilize us.

Mind of the Murderer

Anna C Bodell

2013

Inspired by the Murderer in Edgar Allan Poe’s “Tell-Tale Heart”, this mask was made as a set piece for a haunted house theatre in Chicago’s Oak Park.  The mask is a visual representation of the darkness of the Murderer.  The white heart of the Old Man has bled out but still beats   in the throat of the Murderer.  He is draped in chains that bind him to the twisted part of his mind.

Materials: straight pins, glass and plastic beads, fencing, chicken wire, wire, chains, hand spun steel wool, wool roving (hand spun and loose), foaming sealant, patent leather, pleather, silk chiffon, silk burnout chiffon, paint, dye, duct tape, knitted steel wire, knitted yarn, cotton balls,  thread,

"100 Kisses" documentation of a performance

I kissed a suspended 2ft x 4ft panel of glass 100 times.  My fingers bled when they gripped the razor edges.

 ”Portraits of Stranger”

Anna C Bodell 2013

Charcoal, graphite,  balsa and bass wood,

The charcoal drawing was done over the course of 2 hours and 51 minutes on omegle.com March 17, beginning at 4:31 in the afternoon. The wooden piece is a pixelated portrait.  The graphite drawing was done over the course of 3 hours 4 minutes late Saturday night March 16 also on omegle.com.  I drew what was visible in the “stranger” box on omegle overlapping the drawings until the entire paper was covered creating a kind of ghostly static visual.  There is video footage of my drawing and screen recording of the strangers and myself recording this process.

“Welcome Home.”

by Anna C Bodell

January 2013

The series of shattered dream catchers represents the fragility of the sense of ‘home’.  They seem to be on verge of collapse as they hang from nails in the wall in a precarious manner, literally unraveling for the duration of their installation.  The formality of the title “Welcome Home.” has a somewhat foreboding feeling.  It is a greeting for a guest, but with the expectation of comfort.

Dream catchers originate from the Native American nation Objiway, they were made to hang above sleeping babies and children, to filter bad spirits and dreams, protecting the child.  The original function of a dreamcatcher gives particular meaning to this piece suggesting the death of childhood.

The dreamcatchers were constructed while I still lived at my home. The willow vines were stolen in the night from my neighbor’s front yard tree with a pair of silver scissors. I bent and twisted them into round shapes while they were green on the inside and flexible.

I easily crushed the brittle sticks in my hands a few weeks ago.

"Portraits of Strangers: 10:28 AM- 12:57PM April 22, 2013: omegle"

Using omegle.com I drew (in charcoal) the images of “stranger”. On this anonymous social meeting site, I did not interact with the people or ‘skip’ any of them (despite whatever crude actions they may have been performing).  I drew for the duration of each person before they ‘skipped’ me: anywhere from a couple seconds to a half hour. With each ‘skip’ a page of the sketchbook was turned until it was filled.  I drew from 10:28 AM until 12:57 PM on April 22, 2013.
